The ‘Ville Multimodale’, or ‘Multimodal City’, is a vision for a futuristic eco-city based on the consideration of four scales of development: building, neighborhood, territory of the city and wider city region. Beginning from contextual, geographical, social, economic and historical cartographic analyses of the 250 hectares territory of an industrial brownfield on the banks of the Seine in the town of Villeneuve le Roi, southeast to Paris. The objective being a project for urban development to reduce the ecological footprint of the existing site. Thus the project addresses: preservation of resources (including land) and adaptation to climate change; promotion of ecological performance; relationships between densities and urban forms; restoration of existing heritage and valorization of nature and biodiversity; energy sobriety.
At a time when it is vital to reform the way we move, the work of intermodality (at all scales) in the city is more necessary than ever. Structured by three major traffic axes, this suburb benefits from its strategic position between the stations of Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, Villeneuve Triage, Villeneuve-le-Roi and its proximity to the Orly Airport. An east-west Tramway/Freight Tram axis linking Orly to Villeneuve Triage ensures the transport of passengers and goods to the multiple activities developing along this axis. A north-south axis of SkyTran (aerial tramway) linking Villeneuve-Saint-Georges to Paris allows rapid transit of travelers with the capital. A river axis finally crosses the site directly linking the Villeneuve-le-Roi station and that of Villeneuve-Saint-Georges. It allows rapid transport of passengers as well as goods to the businesses that border it. Many industrial infrastructures are preserved, such as the shipyard, currently one of the largest in Ile de France, whose potential is significant for the proper functioning of cargo ports. Continuous green and blue infrastructures within this dense urbanization of 15,000,000 inhabitants on a territory adjacent to water is an insurance for environmental resilience.
